Specialties
We offer the full range of options and recommendations so that our

If needed, we can proceed with more aggressive treatments
incorporating the most recent advancements in orthopedic techniques
and procedures as they are available.

- Many Orthopedic Problems do NOT require surgery
PEDIATRIC ORTHOPEDICS involves treatment
of many of the same orthopedic conditions that affect adults.
However. there are orthopedic conditions that are specific to
children and adolescents. We are trained to treat our younger
patients for all orthopedic conditions, not just sports injuries.
CHILDREN and ADOLESCENT injuries and
orthopedic conditions are treated with attention to the special
needs of our children including aversion to discomfort, injections,
and expedient but safe return to family activities and vacations,
play and sports participation.

CHILDREN and ADOLESCENTS are not just small adults.

ATHLETICS AND SPORTS MEDICINE. We
are proud to have been the Team Physicians for the Radford
University Highlanders for over 30 years, since Chuck Taylor took
the first Radford Intercollegiate Basketball team onto the floor in
1976.
We continue to serve Athletes and Students at
Radford University, Virginia Tech, New River
Community College, and for many of the
High Schools in the New River Valley and Southwest Virginia.
We have specialized experience in sports medicine and athletic
injuries, non operative and operative, including extensive
experience in arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques. Our
continuing education includes cadaveric hands-on retraining in the
most recent techniques which we perform regularly at our local
institutions.

Newest Arthroscopic Techniques
MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY including
ARTHROSCOPIC and OUTPATIENT SURGERY can be done locally. New
techniques and advancements allow procedures that formerly required
extensive incisions and/or hospitalization to be done with minimal
incisions and on an outpatient basis in either freestanding surgical
center or hospital outpatient setting.
IN HOUSE SURGERY
There are numerous relatively minor procedures that can be performed
in an outpatient office setting. Skin Lesions, Small Cysts, Trigger
Fingers, DeQuevrains, some Tendon Releases, some Wound Care
Procedures and other Minor Orthopedic and Skin Lesions can be
safely, effectively, and Very Economically treated in our office
Surgical Suite. Only cases where Safe Comfortable Local anesthetics
are sufficient are performed in our office Surgery. Pathologic
examination is ordered when indicated.
OSTEOARTHRITIS JOINT SALVAGE and JOINT SPARING TECHNIQUES
are available including strength training, therapy, bracing,
medications, synvisc and cartilage sparing salvage techniques to
provide the necessary treatment not overtreatment .
An exercise Program, a
Brace, an Orthotic
or A SIMPLE INJECTION COULD BE YOUR ANSWER.
MINIMALLY INVASIVE TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENT
The Advanced Procedures “as seen on TV” and offered at National
Centers are performed here in the New River Valley…..We have
continuing specialized postgraduate training in Minimally Invasive
Surgery Techniques for Total Joint Arthroplasty (Replacements).
Often Joint Replacements can
be performed with a very minimal incision and a very minimal
Hospital stay.
Rehabilitation and long term follow-up is very important. Joint
Replacements do eventually wear out. If and/or when a Joint
Replacement fails, experienced orthopedic care is needed.
We do not limit our practice
to “Just Knees and Shoulders”, “Just Blue Cross”, “Only
Primary Replacements”. We have extensive experience in all kinds of
Joint Replacements, Joint Replacement Techniques, and Revision Joint
Replacements. (Revision Joint Replacement is the salvage of
those perhaps put in too hastily or when the implants have
worn out or failed) We will help you decide if and when joint
replacement is right for you. We intend to care for you and your implant(s) ourselves.

CONTINUITY OF CARE
In
these times of instability and increasing mobility, many people
including physicians are here for 2, 3, 5, or 10 years before moving
on to a new area.
Our Physicians selected the New River Valley as the place where we wanted to
live, raise our families, work and serve our community. We have each
been here as our first and only practice. (Dr Gray since March 1984.
Dr Donnelly since July 1989. We each intend to continue to be
here for our patients and our community.
HAND, FOOT and ANKLE Dr
Gray Dr Donnelly has training and experience in care of
Orthopedic and Neurologic Problems of both Upper and Lower
Extremities.
We do not limit our care to certain parts of the upper extremity, we
care for Upper Extremity Problems of the Neck, Shoulder and Elbow,
as well as Problems of the Hand, Wrist, and Fingers.
In the Lower Extremity, in addition to knee injuries, we care for
Back ,Hip, Knee, Ankle, Foot, and Toe Orthopedic Problems.
In Upper and Lower Extremity, Hand and Foot Orthopedic Problems,
many times an Exercise Program, Gait Modification,
Anti-Inflammatory, Braces, Orthotics are effective treatments. Some
problems are amenable to very simple procedures. Other problems can
be addressed through more simple to more complex Operative and/or
Rehabilitative Procedures.
HAND FOOT AND ANKLE
We have not offered Spinal Surgical Procedures through our office
for approximately 20 years, but can treat most
problems more conservatively, and make appropriate referrals
as needed.
NON OPERATIVE SPINAL CARE
OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE We have a great deal of experience in
occupational medicine and serve on many of the compensation panels
for our local industries. We are sensitive to the needs of our
patients who are unfortunate enough to have on-the-job orthopedic
problem, and have years of experience in treatment, rehabilitation,
and return to a productive environment at one of our local
industries in a safe and timely manner.
We have a special interest in OSTEOPOROSIS PREVENTION DIAGNOSIS AND
TREATMENT. In addition to our physicians, 4 of our staff are
qualified for bone density testing. Dr Gray is a Certified Bone
Densitomitrist with the International Society for Clinical
Densitometry. A Sahara Peripheral (Heel) Unit and a Hologic Central
DEXA Scanner (upgraded in 2005) are available for the measurement of
bone density. Both do quick painless noninvasive accurate assessment
of bone density. The Hologic Central DEXA is also equipped with
specialized software and scanner arrays for whole body density
scans, and bone density studies in children and athletes.
Osteoporosis is a prevalent and sometimes under-evaluated problem.
The test is simple and painless requiring 15-30 minutes, no
disrobing with loose fitting clothing, and no needles. It is usually
covered by insurance as an outpatient test. …..This is a disease for
which much of the population is "at risk". Age, inactivity, diet,
medications, thyroid problems are some other risk factors. Men and
women, thin and "not so thin", pre and post menopausal, can have
this problem as can those of any race. This is a problem that
can be treated with exercise regimens, vitamin and mineral
supplementation, and with several medications. Successful treatment
however is best started early before bone strength decreases.

DIGITAL ROENTGENOGRAPHIC (XRAY) EQUIPMENT
Most office orthopedic Xray studies, when indicated, can be done
"on-site" by one of our certified Xray technicians. We have modern
recently upgraded low exposure DIGITAL x-ray equipment.
